Clearances means getting permissions for the logos, brands, stack footage, images and music while you create the film instead of doing it after the production has been completed. For example if you had a street scene in your film and there was a Aston martin on the street and you had not referenced Aston martin in any way you will more likely not be to show that scene or legal action could take place. This shows us that you must also clear your film as you are producing it. You have to make sure that your film is cleared before distributing it because there will more likely be legal action taken against you and the film. A tip would be using made up car brands so you don't have to reference anything.
Clearance checklist
- Script clearance: If you are making a film about a fictional character you have to make sure you don't use someone real name without written permission.
- Content clearance: Make sure you clear all content in your film such as logos, brands, stock footage and images, especially if you don't have permission.
- Music clearance: make sure all music even if original or published has to be cleared from you film.
- Location clearances: Make sure you reference the locations in the film.
- Actor's/contributor's clearances: Any Actor or contributor has to sign a clearance contract before production.
